Comments: Allen was founded by John Brackett Allen, who named the town after himself. Situated near Quijotoa, Allen was on the western side of the Ben Nevis Mountain, while Quijotoa was on the east. When American settlers began flocking to Quijotoa, General Brackett decided to build a hotel six miles from Quijotoa, around which the town of Allen developed. The hotel was known for serving the best liquors in the territory and was considered one of the more luxurious hotels on the frontier. The small settlement included the hotel, a half dozen houses, a few tents, and a post office established in 1880. However, by 1886, the post office closed, and the town was abandoned. (Wikipedia)

Current Status: Abandoned

Remarks: Allen’s brief existence was closely tied to the mining activities in the Quijotoa area. The town’s decline and eventual abandonment reflect the transient nature of mining boomtowns in the late 19th century.
