Military Ghost Town Sites
America’s military history left a surprising number of ghost towns in its wake. Abandoned frontier forts, World War II internment and training camp communities, Cold War era installations, and decommissioned weapons testing sites all created communities that were built for a specific military purpose and then left behind when that purpose ended. Military ghost town sites are found across the country, from the frontier forts of the Great Plains to the coastal defense installations of both coasts.
