River Submerged Ghost Towns

Some of America’s most poignant ghost towns are now underwater. The construction of dams and reservoirs throughout the 20th century flooded dozens of entire communities – their residents relocated, their buildings demolished or left to sink beneath the rising water. During droughts, when reservoir levels drop, these submerged ghost towns sometimes re-emerge from the water, offering a ghostly glimpse of the communities that were sacrificed for flood control and water supply.
