Rhode Island Ghost Towns

Rhode Island may be America’s smallest state but it hides a surprising number of ghost towns. Former mill villages in the Blackstone Valley, colonial era farming communities in the western uplands, and small coastal fishing settlements that could not survive changing economies all left traces in the Rhode Island landscape. Some of the oldest abandoned settlement sites in New England are found in Rhode Island, their stone walls and cellar holes hidden in second growth forest.
