North Dakota Ghost Towns

North Dakota’s ghost towns are monuments to the optimism and heartbreak of the Great Plains homestead era. The railroad land boom of the 1880s filled the prairies with hopeful communities, and drought, falling wheat prices, and the long rural depopulation of the 20th century emptied most of them. North Dakota has more ghost towns relative to its current population than almost any other state – entire counties that once had thriving communities now have only a handful of residents.
