Minnesota Ghost Towns

Minnesota’s ghost towns are shaped by the state’s timber, mining, and agricultural history. Iron ore mining towns on the Mesabi and Vermilion ranges boomed in the early 1900s and faded as the ore was exhausted. Lumber camps in the northern forests were abandoned when the great pines were cut. Small farming communities on the southern prairies were emptied by drought, consolidation, and the long rural depopulation that has reshaped the Midwest over the past century.
